Care for Kaleo
Kaleo is a village in the Upper West Region (UWR) of Ghana, about 400 miles inland from the capital, Accra.
Whilst Ghana is a third world country the UWR is the poorest region of the country so that poverty is extreme. Care for Kaleo is a registered UK Charity (No 1119385) and provides a Nursery School for 80 children from Kaleo and the surrounding villages.
The Church and Sunday school premises of the Baptist church are used at present. The children receive a multi-sensory UK-style education for two years which gives them a solid grounding for moving into primary education. The school recently had an inspection and passed with flying colours!
Each day the children receive a hot nutritious meal as many of the local children suffer from malnutrition, a sure sign being extended tummies, each meal contains a source of protein so helping to balance their daily diet. Although Care for Kaleo provides some money for food, we have encouraged the parents of the children to start a Nursery Farm to grow food to be used for the meal.
At the completion of their Nursery education 40 children each year progress to
primary education. Although primary education is free in Ghana, uniforms, exercise books, pens, pencils and satchels all have to be paid for. This charity provides these items so that the children can continue their education. Our next project is to have local people construct a purpose-built Nursery School half way between Kaleo and the neighboring village to enable children from both villages to attend.
The charity operates by receiving donations from interested people and organisations also from the “Friends of Kaleo” who so generously give a regular amount monthly. If you would like either to donate or become a “Friend of Kaleo” please contact one of the following:
