- Wesleys CafeWesleys is Baildon’s community cafe. There is always a warm welcome awaiting you. Always available are Taylor’s Fair Trade coffee and tea, light refreshments and a range of Fair Trade foods. Freshly cooked lunches are also available from Monday to Friday. Wesleys was formed in its current form in 1995 with the aims of providing an outreach to the local community, a service to the Church family and opportunities for voluntary service. The hope is that any profits generated will be used for mission to the local community. Wesleys employs two cooks, Mary and Lynne, on a job-share basis, but their job would be impossible without the help of about 75 cheerful volunteers. Volunteers mainly give up 2 hours of their time once a week, once a fortnight or once a month. Their duties involve taking orders or preparing salads and sandwiches and serving drinks and snacks. There is a tremendous feeling of fellowship in our kitchen ‘the Fellowship of the Kitchen Sink’. New volunteers are always welcome, no experience is necessary – just a smile and a willingness to ‘muck in’. - The BibleThe Bible is rightly called Christianity’s foundation document. It’s a story in five stages of God’s dealings with his people on earth, presented in a collection of 66 ‘books’ of widely differing style and length. 1. Creation: The first book is called Genesis, and its first two chapters tell how God arranged the heavens and the earth, and the water and dry land with plants, filling them with living creatures and appointing humans as his regent on earth to work and look after it all. 2. Fall: Chapters 3-11 record humanity’s rebellion against God’s authority, and the utterly disastrous consequences for the whole earth. 3. Israel: God then chose one man (Abraham) and from his family formed a whole nation (Israel) with a land of their own to live in, to show the rest of the world what life with God could be like, and should be. The whole of the rest of the Old Testament records their ups and downs, and God’s continuing relationship with them, as his plan for the rescue from the Fall unfolded over 2,000 years. 4. - FuneralsChristians believe that the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ give them hope and cause for thanksgiving in the face of death. In this faith we entrust those who have died to the infinite mercy and love of God. The Methodist funeral service acknowledges this hope and offers bereaved people the opportunity to remember their loved one’s life and offer them into God’s care. How do we arrange a funeral? Under normal circumstances, you will use the services of a local funeral director, who will provide advice and organise all the practical arrangements. If you would wish the funeral to be held at Baildon Methodist Church and/or our Minister, Rev Alistair Newton [hyperlink] to be involved this can be arranged via the Funeral Director or you could make direct contact with Alistair. The person who has died may have left details of the sort of funeral that they hoped for. Alistair will want to support families in keeping to such arrangements as much as possible and in making the service a personal and appropriate occasion. We all struggle with prayer and it’s sometimes scary to come into the presence of the living God; and in another way it is difficult to do because it is frightening to come into the presence of the living God. Our prayer group enables us to come into a prayer-full friendly structured environment. - WeddingsThe largest of all the Methodist Churches in the Bradford North Circuit, Baildon Methodist Church is an excellent venue for a Church Wedding. You could even combine the wedding with a post wedding ‘dry’ celebration in Wesleys Hall [seats up to 100] with catering supplied by Wesleys Catering Limited What is the first step? Your first step is to approach the Minister, Rev Alistair Newton [hyperlinked to his e-M address]. Alistair would then provide a dialogue of marriage preparation and you may then be given a copy of a book called ‘A Church Wedding’, which is a helpful resource for people thinking about the implications of getting married. In addition and as part of the legal process, prospective marriage partners will need to pay a visit to the local registry office. Does one of us have to be a Methodist? People wanting to marry in church don’t have to be members of the church, but most ministers will ask them why they wish to marry in church. A church marriage is a solemn Christian ceremony, with prayers and Bible readings reflecting Christian understandings of what marriage is about. - Lectionary Bible StudyWith its origins in history, the only exposure to the scriptures was the public reading of the Word of God, as books were too expensive. A fundamental feature of Christian Worship, the Revised Common Lectionary, follows a 3 year cycle through the old and new testament. A plan, to make sure that passages are read at an appropriate time in the biblical calendar, over the course the entire bible gets read and nothing is neglected. Lectionary: the word means Schedule of Readings. Conceptually taken from Judaism, the Jewish lectionary calls for the Torah to be read aloud in its entirety once each year. The end of the lectionary is marked by the holiday called Simchat Torah.

- PhakamisaPhakamisa is a ministry of Pinetown Methodist Church (South Africa) and exists to serve and uplift impoverished communities through the provision of training, resourcing and support. Children, people affected by and infected with AIDS/HIV and the elderly are our main beneficiaries. Ntombifuthi Dlamini, (not her real name) was a very loving, enthusiastic Caregiver living in a rural area near Hillcrest. Her husband died of HIV AIDS and she was raising her own family of 3- one of whom had matriculated, but is unemployed; one who is re-writing his final year of school and a 13 year old daughter, Zandile. Her sister died recently, so Ntombifuthi took charge of her young family – a 2 year old girl and a 3 year old boy. Ntombifuthi was unemployed, but earned money by selling vegetables from her group’s communal garden. It was not very lucrative as most people in her rural community grew their own vegetables, but she had no skill to enter the job market. Being aware of her attempts to survive, neighbours would sometimes purchase her vegetables, even though they were growing their own. Two years ago, Zandile, (then aged 11) started having difficulty walking- tripping over things and being clumsy. The…
